Above is the one I'm almost positive is H. gigas. It turns jet black right after a molt and then fades into a uniform rust color. |
Here are its rear legs. They're somewhat stout, but have no odd swelling. |
The above was sold to me as H. gigas, but has somewhat "football" shaped swelling on its rear legs. It has very dark femurs, and is chocolate colored overall with red setae. It lightens up slightly before a molt, but certainly not rusty like the spider at the top of the page. . .just a chocolate brown. It looks very similar to R. West's pic of an H. ederi (click on link) |
This is the same spider as the one to the right, closer to its molt. |
This is a third spider, sold to me as H. ederi. It has long legs 4 and very pronounced swelling toward the "ankles" and "feet". It is similar in coloration to the spider above, but gets a little rusty colored toward its molts, especially on its forelegs. |
Here is a comparison between the rear legs. The spider pictured to the left (suppsoedly H. ederi) is at the top of this photo (labelled specimen 2). |
Here are the same two from the side. Note the "football" shaped leg swelling in specimen 1. |
